Once again it is strawberry and basil season. Thank goodness they go so well together.
Painter’s tape has replaced like 90% of my use cases for duct tape and masking tape. Stuff’s nigh-indestructible and doesn’t leave a mark. It’s the gentle giant of tapes.
Legend is French for “the gend”.
I feel like FFXIV has spoiled me. Advancing the main story is always an explicit action in FFXIV. You never get into a situation like you do in single player RPGs where you have to guess which path is the intended one and which is a side path you should explore while you still have a chance. Sure it takes some of the mystery out of the whole experience, but it’s so much less stressful overall that it’s well worth the tradeoff.
The great thing about genres is that they don’t stop existing just because they’re no longer in fashion. If you like a genre you can just make more things in that genre and no one can stop you. Like it doesn’t even have to be a retro thing or a nostalgia thing. Like a kind of thing? Make some of your own!
The little-known sequel to The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck’s Despairagus.
I appreciate the argument in favor of filler episodes, that some breathing room is good and that not every episode needs to move the plot forward, but in my opinion it doesn’t go far enough. Bring back purely episodic shows. Jessica Fletcher doesn’t need forward momentum; she’s too busy solving mysteries.
The FFXIV job actions trailer is so funny to me because it’s like. I get that for a lot of people this is a big deal that impacts their enjoyment of their job, their job fantasy, etc. But for me? I don’t play with full effects on for anyone, not even myself. Instant sensory overload. I have no idea what attacks look like.
Roger Corman
Like many others, I was introduced to Roger Corman's work through MST3K. The world is far richer for his contributions to cinema, in quantity if not always in quality.
Shout! Factory TV did a great documentary/interview series about Roger Corman’s work a few years ago called CULT-TASTIC: TALES FROM THE TRENCHES WITH ROGER AND JULIE CORMAN. I highly recommend it.
Constantly referring to dishes of unknown genre as some “kind of situation”
“Looks like a tom kha soup kind of situation.”
“What we’ve got here is a sweet and sour tofu kind of situation.”
